The Office star Davis calls in lawyers over Daily Mail weightloss article

LONDON - Lucy Davis, the actress who played Dawn in 'The Office', has complained to the Daily Mail about a story it published, which she said was defamatory and caused distress to herself, her family and friends.

Davis, whose weightloss has been the subject of press coverage in celebrity magazines and tabloids, has instructed her solicitors Schillings to complain about an article headlined "Where's Lucy Gone?" that appeared on January 7.

The article made comments about Davis health, weight and career, which Schillings has said are "grossly defamatory, inaccurate and misleading". It is complaining on the grounds that the article is in contravention of Davis' human rights.

The actress, who also appeared in the Simon Pegg film 'Shaun of the Dead' and is to star in 'Garfield 2', is reported to have been hospitalised during the Christmas holidays because of kidney problems, although her father, comedian Jasper Carrott, told reporters at the time that she was recovering well.

Lawyers Schillings said in a statement: "For the record, Ms Davis is in good health and is currently in the US, where she has a number of films scheduled to open this year."

The complaint is being issued in an attempt to avoid further repetition of the Daily Mail's allegations.

Davis won fame and the hearts of the British public for her portrayal of Dawn in the Ricky Gervais comedy 'The Office', giving viewers the fairytale ending they craved when she dumped her overbearing boyfriend to get it together with her smitten colleague Tim, played by Martin Freeman.
