Gervais tops podcast chart for Guardian Unlimited

LONDON - Guardian Unlimited's 'The Ricky Gervais Show' has been named the most popular podcast in the UK and the US, according to latest figures from Apple.

Apple's Top Subscribed Podcasts chart has revealed that Gervais's show has toppled Chris Moyles' BBC Radio 1 breakfast show from the UK top spot  and is also now number one in the US, after notching up 180,000 downloads in its first week.

The 12 weekly half-hour shows feature all new material and Gervais's regular writing partner Stephen Merchant and producer and sidekick Karl Pilkington.

Emily Bell, Guardian Unlimited editor-in-chief, said: "This has established an important precedent that Guardian Unlimited can host the best original content from the world's most popular performers, in whatever format and we will be building on this in 2006."

The shows, which features no music, have the trio reprising their successful shows on Xfm.
