Johnstone, currently publishing director of Loaded, will report to Brule, CEO of the Wallpaper Group, which includes style magazine Wallpaper and Spruce.
Brule created Wallpaper in 1996 and in a short time sold it to Time Inc for £1m. Following the merger of AOL and Time Warner, Wallpaper has fallen under the auspices of recent acquisition IPC Media.
Last month, Brule failed to stage a buy-back of his magazine from the publisher, after clashing with IPC management. Reportedly the company had asked Brule to account for his time at the office and clashed over expenses -- although this has been denied. A press release issued by IPC says that Johnstone will "implement a robust cost system".
His responsibilities will include managing the profit and loss of both titles, and implementing commercial and business strategy across the consumer publishing arm of the group.
Johnstone, 29, was the publisher of Ministry of Sound's Ministry before moving to IPC's lads magazine Loaded. Mike Soutar, managing director of IPC Ignite!, said: "Richard is a publishing dynamo and he will be a huge asset to the Wallpaper team."
He takes up his role on March 25. IPC has not yet announced his successor.
Elsewhere, IPC Media also announced the appointment of a new editor at Homes & Gardens magazine. She is Isobel McKenzie-Price, editor of Ideal Home magazine. McKenzie-Price will follow in the footsteps of Matthew Line, who has decided to step down after more than four years as editor of Homes & Gardens.
