Time Inc's two big consumer brands, Wallpaper and InStyle, are to
be folded into the IPC Media organisation structure. IPC has also
announced a further 118 redundancies, including between 20 and 40 in
sales.
The Time Inc news has been the subject of much debate in the industry
since parent AOL Time Warner first announced its acquisition of IPC in
July. As predicted, (Media Business 22 October), InStyle, publisher
Katie Egan and its ad sales team will now report to IPC Southbank
managing director Tim Brooks.
More surprisingly, the Wallpaper group - including editorial director
and CEO Tyler Brule and publisher Alasdhair Willis - will report to Mike
Soutar, managing director of men's and music group IPC Ignite.
Brule, who founded Wallpaper and its offshoots, Wink Media and Spruce,
before selling to Time Inc, has to now had total autonomy. The move has
prompted speculation over his long-term involvement with Wallpaper.
Wallpaper and InStyle will remain in their existing offices, while Time
magazine will stay outside the IPC structure.
The additional 118 redundancies takes the total axed to more than 300
since the AOL takeover. The news is almost certain to preface further
magazine closures.
