
Among all large daily UK regional papers, only the Trinity Mirror-owned Birmingham Post and the Guardian Media Group's Manchester Evening News (MEN) recorded a year-on-year circulation increase.
The Manchester Evening News (MEN) recorded a year-on-year rise of 85.8%, up to 161,545 copies. The 40p paper sold an average of 77,125 copies a day, Monday to Saturday, in Greater Manchester in the six months to June. A further 83,768 free copies were distributed in central Manchester every day. It is the first time free and paid copies have been combined for the ABC release.
Eleven daily papers recorded circulation figures above 60,000: eight English papers, two Scottish and one from Northern Ireland. For most of these 11 papers, paid-for copies accounted for 97% of the circulation. Free copies accounted for 13% of Independent News & Media's Belfast Telegraph's circulation and 52.2% of the MEN's.
The greatest percentage decline in circulation year on year was at the Doncaster Star down by 13% to 3,713 copies. Of the major dailies, the Liverpool Daily Post recorded the greatest decline, down 10.7% to 14,266.
