The regional newspaper group's 164 sites attracted more than 5.1 million unique users and generated 53.7 million page impressions, according to an audit of local newspaper sites to be published this week.
Newsquest claims this is the highest audited number published by a regional newspaper group.
Roger Green managing director, Newsquest Digital Media, said the improved online penetration was down to a combination of continued development, understanding what local audiences want and the significant effort shown by local teams.
Rival newsgroup Trinity Mirror is also looking to boost visitors to its 155 regional newspaper sites, beefing up its Coventry Telegraph site in April, which included a cluster of postcode-targeted "hyper-local" news sites for the area.
Digital products now account for 7% of Trinity Mirror's regional revenues and 10% of profits, mostly from classified and local advertising.
The BBC also has plans to launch 60 hyper-local news sites regionally this October, a move which prompted Trinity Mirror's chief executive Sly Bailey to accuse the corporation of distorting "an embryonic market".
