Red Stripe signs Lennox Lewis for new US ad campaign

LONDON - Former British heavyweight champion, Lennox Lewis, is to front a new humorous advertising and online campaign for Red Stripe beer in the US, where a mean-looking Lewis gets set to pummel the brand's Jamaican ambassador.

Created by BBDO New York, the sport features Lewis in a confrontation with the Red Stripe ambassador, Jamaican musician Dorrel Salmon.

In the 30-second spot, Dorrel encourage viewers to visit to see Lewis and the Ambassador square off in a boxing match.

But as the camera pans out to Lewis, who is pounding a punch bag, Dorrel has second thoughts and instead proposes he and Lewis cook traditional Jamaican plaintains.

A second longer spot has the two in the middle of a plaintain fry-up. When Lewis asks a now bespectacled Dorrel what happened to the fight, Dorrel's sidekick Jimmy points out that a boxer can not hit a man with glasses on.

"It's been a while since I put the gloves back on and stepped in front of the camera. The Red Stripe advertising campaign allowed me to do what I do best -- punching, intimidating and delivering smooth lines. I know Red Stripe fans everywhere will be thrilled with the end product," Lewis said.

The television campaign airs this summer in the US as part of Red Stripe's "Hooray Beer!" campaign, which has been used in previous Red Stripe spots.

Earlier this year, Red Stripe signed a one-year agreement to become the official beer sponsor at England's seven Test grounds for the forthcoming cricket season.

Chris Parsons, a Red Stripe spokesperson, said: "Using TV in conjunction with the web to tell a story is a unique advertising initiative for Red Stripe.

"Throw in the star power of one of the greatest boxers in history and you have all the makings of a highly successful campaign that not only builds brand awareness, but drives web traffic as well."

Shot in Los Angeles, the ads were produced by Hungry Man Production and directed by Bennett Miller, who was behind the Emmy award-winning feature-length documentary 'The Cruise'. He has also directed spots for Cingular, Verizon, Ace Hardware and the new TNN Network campaigns.
