Property trumps sex and politics in TV overnights

LONDON - ITV1's foray into political drama with 'Confessions of a Diary Secretary' portraying the amorous antics of deputy prime minister John Prescott pulled in 18.3% of viewers last night but was trounced by Channel 4's returning 'Grand Designs' with a 24.4% total.

BBC One lost out in the 9pm slot as 4.1m viewers tuned into its commercial rival to watch the dramatisation of John Prescott's affair with his secretary Tracey Temple, starring John Henshaw and Maxine Peake.

ITV1's drama had the same 90 minute running time as 'Grand Designs', which brought in a sizeable 5.4m audience and proved it retains its ability to fascinate a property-obsessed country.

BBC One managed a 13.2% share with 3m viewers for the second episode of its 9pm-10pm series 'New Street Law'.

In the 8pm-9pm slot, ITV1 led the field with 'The Bill' getting 5.9m viewers and a 24.4% share. It was followed by BBC One's documentary series 'Seaside Rescue', which got 4m viewers and 16.7%.

'Dragon's Den' on BBC Two and 'Relocation, Relocation' on Channel 4 tied with 3.3m viewers, while 'Child in a Million', Five's medical documentary series got 800,000 viewers.

Five's new comedy drama 'Kitchen' starring comedian Eddie Izzard broadcastfrom 9pm until 11pm, pulled in a disappointing 700,000 viewers or 3.4% of the total viewing audience.
