Pressure grows on Daily Mirror to name source soldiers

LONDON – Pressure is growing on the Daily Mirror today to name the soldiers who gave it the photographs showing Iraqis being tortured, as the Armed Forces minister prepares to make a statement to MPs.

Adam Ingram is due to address the Commons at 3.30pm, as the Daily Mirror was accused by some of fitting up British troops who could now be targets of Arab extremists because of the paper's story.

The accusations were made on the BBC News website where one man wrote: "As it becomes clear our own British newspaper has fitted our troops up and spread hatred against the British people in the Arab world. I think the newspaper should faces consequences for this cowardly act against the British forces."

Another accused the paper of creating a propaganda coup for Al-Qaeda, "What a propaganda coup for Al-Qaeda that so many people have been taken in by this rubbish."

This morning the Daily Mirror was continuing to stand by its claims that British soldiers abused Iraqi prisoners despite a growing body of evidence that the pictures are fakes.

Yesterday, senior British officers came forward with more evidence that the pictures had been artificially created as the Royal Military Police launched an inquiry in the UK, Iraq and Cyprus into the pictures published by the Daily Mirror.

The RMP investigation is looking at a total of 18 photographs as part of its investigation, as well as going through former prisoner records.

Sources close to the regiment have told the BBC that they remain convinced the photographs are not genuine. Attention is now turning to territorial army troops who served in Iraq.

One of the Mirror's sources -- a serving member of the regiment at the centre of the abuse storm, the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, who was pictured with his face obscured in the paper -- has denied that he spoke to reporters.

However, the Mirror says its sources stand by their story and it says it remains convinced that the pictures are the real thing.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Daily Mirror said: "Although we appreciate the Queen's Lancashire Regiment has concerns, as they put it, about the Daily Mirror, we also have very serious concerns about the behaviour of some of their troops in Iraq."

Experts who have looked at the pictures have identified a number of inconsistencies, with one officer, Colonel David Black, a former commander of the regiment, saying that the pictures were probably not even taken in Iraq.

He points to the fact that the prisoner is seen sitting in the back of a Bedford MK lorry, which was not deployed in Iraq. However, the lorries are used by TA units at home in the UK.

Others are suspicious of the model of rifle and the uniform the soldier photographed is wearing. They point to the fact that there is no sign of dirt or sweat despite being in the Iraqi desert.

The soldier in the picture is seen wearing a floppy hat rather than a helmet or a beret worn in Iraq. Experts also point to the lack of sling on the rifle and that it is the troublesome SA80 MKI rather than the upgraded MKII, which British troops are now issued with.
