Mirror completes Saturday package with football title

LONDON - The Daily Mirror is to complete its new Saturday package with the launch of a 16-page football supplement called Mirror FC, from this weekend.

Yesterday, it was revealed that the paper was replacing its Saturday supplements M magazine and listings title The Look, which published their final editions last week, with a new listings magazine called We Love Telly.

Mirror FC -- the FC stands for Football Confidential -- will be produced by the Mirror's sports team, which writes the daily's sports pages, and will be similar in format to The Look, giving the Saturday newspaper the same feel to the consumer on the newsstand.

Ellis Watson, general manager at MGN, said that the two supplements "makes sure the new Daily Mirror Saturday package offers unbeatable value to our readers and advertisers".

The new magazines are part of a sweeping review of Trinity Mirror by chief executive Sly Bailey, who last week outlined her strategy to turn around the fortunes of the three national newspapers, which also include the Sunday Mirror and The People.

In the last set of ABCs for July, the Daily Mirror showed a month-on-month rise of 0.33%, down 6.54% year on year, to 1,955,315.

In the Sunday tabloid market, The People was up on June by 1.17% to 1,113,137, but this was still a 15.97% fall since July 2002. The Sunday Mirror was down 0.14% month on month to 1,630,766, a year-on-year drop of 7.48%.

The figures compare with those for Richard Desmond's Daily Star, which was heading toward the 1m figure, with a 24% jump year on year to 912,767, a month-on-month increase of 4.93%.

His Daily Star Sunday also appeared to be the doing well with a month-on-month rise of 10.81% to 528,107.
