Premium TV in football content deal with AOL UK

LONDON – Premium TV, the NTL Europe-owned network of football websites, has signed a broadband content and acquisition agreement with AOL UK.

From this week, every AOL Broadband account will be able to get a free 12-month subscription to one of 76 Premier League, Nationwide Football League and Scottish Premier League club audio and video subscription sites run by Premium TV and its joint ventures with the Nationwide Football League and individual Premier League clubs.

The services, branded World, are packed with official insider information, audio and video news bulletins and player interviews, live match commentary, and exclusive online goal highlights direct from the clubs.

As part of the deal, AOL will promote its broadband service on each club website and a heavyweight advertising and promotional campaign under the banner "Better with Broadband" will run across all Premium TV's online properties. This will include a series of splash screens, Flash video, editorial promotion and banner ads.

In addition, AOL Broadband will be advertised across traditional media owned by the clubs, including match-day programmes. All fans who sign up for AOL Broadband will receive a free subscription to the World package worth £34.99 a year.

Oliver Slipper, commercial director of Premium TV, said: "For years, people have talked about sports content being one of the key drivers in the broadband revolution. Broadband networks can now look to internet rights holders to drive their acquisition marketing messages. Collectively Premium TV's exclusive mobile and online rights appeal to more UK residents than those owned by any other online rights holders. This can only be good news for AOL Broadband."

Premium TV has signed up 2m registered football fans and more than 50,000 paying subscribers, with new sign-ups of up to 1,000 fans a day.

Chris Condron, AOL UK's head of broadband content, said: "Football fans can now sign up for free online access to the latest video action from a massive selection of clubs on AOL Broadband. By offering free subscriptions to the premium areas of these football club websites, we are further strengthening the AOL Broadband service and will be running a broad-reaching marketing campaign to encourage football fans to sign up."
