At the third and final round of this year’s corporate entertainment competition, organised by Sternberg Clarke in partnership with Event magazine, the musical duo fought off stiff competition on the night in front of a 200-strong industry audience.

The event saw six acts competing for a place in the Beat the Brief 2014 final, which will take place at next week’s Event Awards (2 October) at Troxy. The acts were required to tailor their performances around a spoof corporate event brief for the launch of a new hybrid sports car, called Halo.

Urban and sports entertainment group SBX created a performance featuring various skills including breakdancing, football and basketball skills and beatboxing, while Newcastle-born escapologist and magician Chris Cross kept guests entertained with an energetic routine culminating in the performer escaping from a straightjacket.

String quartet Graffiti Classics also provided a bespoke routine, which featured opera singing and dance routines, and stand-up comedian and impressionist Mikey Bharj tailored his routine to the brief by focusing his jokes on car observations while mimicking the voices of Barack Obama, Nicholas Cage and Christopher Walken.

Cabaret act ToneAcity, made up of stars from London’s West End theatre district, rounded off proceedings by adapting their performance around Beyoncé track Halo.

A panel of industry judges shortlisted Graffiti Classics, Mikey Bharj and Jollyboat as the three acts for audience members to then vote for as their favourite and winning act. Jollyboat was crowned the winner and presented with a personalised bottle of Champagne, supplied by Matthew Young, gift experience manager at Intervino.

Judges on the night included Adam Sternberg, director at Sternberg Clarke; Samantha Edwards, news editor at Event magazine; Liz Lockard, group events manager at Haymarket Publishing; and Andrew Birnie, general manager at Café de Paris.
