In pictures: British Army turns to Oculus Rift for recruitment

The British Army has launched a new recruitment campaign that utilises Oculus Rift technology to let wearers virtually experience live fire exercises.

Agency JWT worked with virtual reality specialists Visualise to develop the experience. The public will be invited to experience a real-world scenario of volunteering in the army by stepping into a Range Rover and popping on an Oculus Rift headset.

The wearer will be transported to Salisbury Plain as a crewman in a Challenger 2 tank. They will be surrounded by other tanks that are engaging enemy positions using laser sights and will be asked to communicate with other soldiers.

The experience launched at London Waterloo last Friday (16 January) and will move to Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds.

Major General Chris Tickell, director-general of the British Army recruiting and training division, said: "By using the virtual headsets, people will be able to step straight into an exciting real-world scenario of volunteering with the Army Reserve and the huge variety of challenging roles there are to choose from.

"Introducing virtual reality technology is just one of the ways that the Army is transforming the way it recruits."

Henry Stuart, managing director at Visualise, added: "This is the first time virtual reality has ever been used for recruitment purposes and to me, the Army are the perfect client to achieve this world-first with, as an organisation that has always mixed tradition with cutting-edge technology."
