In pictures: Borough Market brings event spaces to life in foodie showcase

More than 80 industry representatives were invited to London's Borough Market last night (20 March) as part of a food and drink-themed showcase evening.

It comes a month after the market announced it would be available to hire for events. 

Guests were invited to attend a reception at 1 Cathedral Street, with canapés served by The London Kitchen. These included cheese straws served in flowerpots; lavender marinated lamb on rosemary skewers with creamed celeriac dip; rabbit rillettes with apple and cider vinegar relish on crostini; and mini prawn and lobster cocktail with bloody mary mayonnaise served in a shot glass.

Inside the Victorian building, which overlooks Southwark Cathedral, Keith Davis, managing director of Borough Market, said: "We've been renowned for being one of the best fruit and veg markets in Europe, but we are more than that. About a year and a half a go we set up a company called Borough Market Business because the market itself is a charity. We run a number of events, but we are very tightly controlled because we don't want to move too far away from what we believe in. 

"We will be using the new company to help the charity and out overall objectives to deliver a quality to this area as well."

Davis went on to thank suppliers to the event including The London Kitchen and Polar Bear Live, who provided lighting for the event. 

Guests were then divided into two groups to go on either an 'apples' or 'pears' tour around the food market. This included Jubilee Place, an outdoor area measuring 1,021sqm and able to accommodate 500 people. Within the main market space, attendees were served paella by Furness Fish and drinks from Cartwright Brothers, both of which are food traders at Borough Market.

In Three Crown Square, guests were treated to a performance by the Borough Market choir, while sampling further treats from market traders including Spice Mountain, Une Normande a Londres and Tartufaia.

The evening rounded off in Market Hall, which has a capacity of 350, and consists of a large glass structure. Guests were able to try a selection of teas from Teas 2 You, have a go at sausage making with Sillfield Farm, and watch a live food demo.
