The Twitter-powered Red versus Blue clash was hosted by football commentator Chris Kamara, and experiential agency Push UK was tasked with designing and producing the stunt.
Fans of Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs were encouraged to support their side to win the ride while two technicians – one representing each side – were able to colour the sportscar based entirely on tweets submitted.
Fans tweeted in their thousands, with both sides of Manchester giving strong support throughout the 60 minutes of the event. Manchester United fans rallied to ensure #Red dominated social media, clinching victory as the final whistle blew.
Kamara said: "The support for both sides on social media was incredible, and plenty of people turned out in Spinningfields to watch the event live. Who knows, this could be a sign of things to come for the long season ahead."
The stunt came as Auto Trader launches its 'What Drives Us Is You' advertising campaign and follows the opening of a new office for 500 employees in Manchester’s First Street.
Jonathan Williams, marketing director at Auto Trader, said: "Red and Blue have been the colours of Auto Trader ever since we started helping the UK buy and sell cars 37 years ago. Now we have a major office in Manchester we thought it was time for people to decide which side they are on."
The sports car will now be professionally coloured ‘devil’ red before being delivered to a lucky randomly-selected winner.
