The Tour de France winner and Olympic cycling champion took nearly a third of the phone votes during the event, which was broadcast live in front of an audience of more than 15,000 - the biggest in the show’s 59-year history.

Wiggins beat 11 other finalists to the title. Olympic heptathlon gold medalist Jessica Ennis was the runner-up.

Agency Unspun . It contracted Showforce to deliver crewing services and Melville GES to lay carpet and create a temporary box office at Excel.

The evening was hosted by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding, and the Duchess of Cambridge presented Wiggins with his trophy.
