Oxfam set to start selling second-hand books online

LONDON - Oxfam has joined forces with a web-based American second-hand books retailer to sell books online.

Oxfam, Europe's biggest second-hand book retailer, is rolling out a pilot project listing the books in 18 branches to sell on from Friday March 12.

The charity is working with American company , an online retailer of second-hand, rare and out-of-print books.

Oxfam branches across the UK listing books will be able reach an international market of book buyers. The charity hopes to raise £250,000 from online books this year. In 2002, revenue from the sale of second-hand books was £13m.

Murray Winters, Oxfam's business development manager, said: "Oxfam bookshop staff have been using Abebooks to value and price books for several years, so it was a natural progression for us to start selling books online through them. Some collectible books have a high value in countries other than the UK so this partnership means we can get the best price for a book and therefore raise the most money for Oxfam's work."

Hannes Blum, Abebooks CEO, said: "Now the millions of book lovers who visit Abebooks each day, whether they're in Idaho or Iceland, will be able to buy the books carried by Oxfam shops in the UK."

If the pilot is successful, the scheme will be rolled out to all 750 UK branches.

Abebooks lists more than 45m books from 12,000 booksellers worldwide.
