He was famous as a film director, particularly for the Oscar-winning 'The English Patient', but had also written numerous screenplays for hit films including 'The Talented Mr Ripley', 'Cold Mountain' and 'Breaking and Entering'. His most recent TV film, yet to be released, is 'The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which is to air on the BBC shortly.

Minghella also dipped his toe into the commercials world, having directed ads such as the Guinness "mustang" spot for Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, and a 2006 ad for Interflora.
In 2005, he filmed a party political broadcast for the Labour Party. It showed then-Prime Minister Tony Blair in conversation with Gordon Brown and was dubbed 'Tony and Gordon - The Movie' by one newspaper.
However, it failed to dispel the notion that Brown and Blair had an irreparable rift in their relationship.
His agent has confirmed his death, but the cause has not been given at the time of writing.
