Law reunites with Minghella for Radio 3 play

LONDON - Jude Law is to reunite with Anthony Minghella in a Radio 3 play penned by the writer and director as part of the BBC station's celebration of Samuel Beckett.

Law is joined by Juliet Stevenson and David Threlfall in the play 'Eyes Down Looking', which is written and directed by Minghella, to be broadcast in 'The Verb' on Saturday April 1 at 10.15pm.

Law plays the role of The Son, Stevenson plays The Mother and David Threlfall is The Father in the play, which is inspired by Beckett and tells the story of a grieving father and son remembering their dead wife and mother.

The play is part of Radio 3's season of Beckett-inspired programmes, celebrating the centenary of Nobel prize-winning writer Beckett's birth.

It is the third time Law has worked with Minghella. He has previously starred in the writer and director's 'The Talented Mr Ripley' in 1999 and 'Cold Mountain' in 2003.

"It's a puzzle of words -- a great excuse to sit and talk for a couple of hours. It's lovely working on something by a great writer who was inspired by a great writer," Law said.

"Three of my favourite actors [Law, Stevenson and Threlfall] in a room, who agreed to this without having read my script -- that's not bad," Minghella added.

The Beckett season also includes other newly commissioned dramas, as well as discussions of Beckett's work featuring Billie Whitelaw, the long-time Beckett muse, and Sir Peter Hall talking about his most famous work 'Waiting for Godot'.

On April 9, Radio 3 presents a Beckett evening that includes new productions of 'Krapp's Last Tape', starring Corin Redgrave, and 'Embers' directed by Stephen Rea and featuring Michael Gambon, Sinead Cusack and Rupert Graves. On April 16, there will be a new recording of 'Waiting for Godot'.

The play marks Minghella's return to BBC radio, where his early work, including plays such as 'Cigarettes' and 'Chocolate', ran on BBC Radio 4.
