The coloured feature lighting will create static and animated lighting effects on the 114.5m sculpture, which is the largest in the UK. It sits in the park between the stadium and the Aquatics Centre and was designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond who also worked on the new lighting.
The sculpture – - will display a 15 minute moving light show every evening as well as special shows for major events in the park. The lights will be tested over the next two weeks.
Andrew Altman, chief executive of the London Legacy Development Corporation (formerly the Olympic Park Legacy Company) said: "The feature lighting opens a completely new artistic aspect to the work of Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. It will create a vivid landmark with dynamic effects that we can use in tandem with different events."
The new lights can be individually controlled and are positioned in areas including the Orbit’s external spiral staircase, looping lattices, canopy and viewing platforms.
