Orange backs Sony Ericsson Walkman phones with Glastonbury movie sponsorship

LONDON - Orange and Sony Ericsson are sponsoring 'Glastonbury the Film', a documentary about the famous music festival, which will premiere across the UK in April, as part of a wider campaign to promote the new Walkman phones.

The film will open in London on April 11 and then move to Bristol, Leeds and Glasgow. Each premiere will have exclusive acoustic performances from Glastonbury stars old and new and is expected to lay host to an array of celebrity appearances.

As part of the Orange and Sony Ericsson promotion, the two are offering tickets to the four film openings of the documentary, which looks at how Glastonbury has changed since it began back in 1970 and features some previously unscreened performances.

Live acts featured in the film include Alabama 3, Billy Bragg, Blur, Cypress Hill, Stereo MCs, The Scissor Sisters and Morrissey, among others. Sony Ericsson will be promoting the forthcoming W81oi phone, which is available on Orange, among other models.

The documentary is directed by 'Absolute Beginners' and 'The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle' director Julien Temple, who spent three years sifting through more than 900 hours of footage from the festival's 30-plus year history.

Temple said: "What has been fascinating, and rewarding, has been making a film from the point of view of the audience, and it is great that we had so many different sources of material, much of it very personal."

The Glastonbury Film project began in 2002 when the future of the festival was in doubt after gatecrashers pushed the venue well beyond its licensed capacity in 2000, landing festival founder Michael Eavis in trouble with Mendip Council.

Eavis said of the movie: "I think he's done a brilliant job. It's very bold, very brave, and will raise some eyebrows."

Glastonbury reopened in 2002 after Mean Fiddler stepped in to ensure security, taking a stake in the festival in the process.

In April 2005, Clear Channel, the US-based media conglomerate with strong links to the Republican Party, took control of Mean Fiddler.

Eavis has expressed concern about the Clear Channel takeover and has said that he will hesitate to renew the contract when it comes up for review this year.
