Online shopping up, but spend down

The UK economy is showing signs of recovery, based on analysis of two million consumers' purchase data by online marketing firm Maximiles.

Online shopping up, but spend down

The proportion of consumers' online spend on consumer goods such as microwaves and kettles was 23.6% in June, above pre-recession levels of 22.4% in June 2008. On fashion it was up from 15.9% pre-recession to 17.8%, while on financial services products, it was up from 4.1% to 9.9%. And the proportion of consumers' online spend on groceries was also up, from 17.5% pre-recession to 21.1%.

However, the average spend per person on many product categories each month has dropped. Average online spend per month on consumer goods dropped from £11.60 pre-recession to £6.04 in June. On fashion items, it was down from £29.92 to £20.84.
