The savings and investments specialist has released data it believes represents the true costs of attending some of this summer’s top events.

A trip to the Olympic Park including tickets, accommodation food and drink is estimated to cost £375.80, double the cost of attending the Reading Festival at £187.80.

The cheapest event is Cowes, with tickets, accommodation and food and drink adding up to £109.95.

Julie Russell, head of customer relationships at Standard Life, said: "2012 is an absolutely fantastic year for sports and events. And for those not just watching them on TV this summer, the key has to be planning well ahead.

"That applies to more than just buying the tickets and ensuring travel is arranged. It's also vital to budget for a great day out. If people want to relax and really enjoy themselves on the day, it will always make sense to have an idea of the likely costs and to save up in advance."
