Previously, the card, which is held by 4.1m students in the UK, was redeemable only in HMV and Arcadia group stores Top Shop and Burton, which had an arrangement that precluded competitors.
Renamed NUS Extra, the card will now be recognised by 35 additional retailers, including Amazon, JJB Sports, Blockbuster and Specsavers.
Students will receive information about the card, which is launched on 14 August, with their exam results.
NUS Extra discounts will range from 10% to 25%. Holders will also receive a free International Student Identity Card, which previously cost 拢7.
The NUS said it expects to announce further deals with partners now the exclusive arrangement has been axed.
