Chippendale will become News Group's media director, as the division aims to combine responsibility for all commercial revenues across newspapers, internet and mobile platforms, for the first time.
Chippendale replaces David Emin, who left News International in March to take up the role of director of advertising at Mirror Group newspapers with reponsibility for ad sales across the Daily Mirror, the Sunday Mirror and The People.
Mike Anderson, managing director of News Group Newspapers, said: "The appointment is part of accelerating News Group's multi-platform media future. Mark brings a rare mix of experience in traditional and digital media to do just that."
Chippendale was made head of European sales at Yahoo! in August 2005, where he was responsible for developing the company's European media strategies and raising its profile in the online advertising community.
He joined Yahoo! after 14 years at Sky, which he left in October 2004, and where he was most recently sales director. During his time at the satellite broadcaster, he pushed the idea of interactive advertising. He also represented the broadcaster on the board of Barb and was Sky's representative on the Thinkbox panel.
He will now be working with The Sun and News of the World across the title's various media platforms.
Chippendale said: "News Group Newspapers is focused on developing truly integrated brands in the UK media market. We are now in the business of selling traditional print, audio and visual advertising.
"We need to provide advertisers with solutions that reflect the way in which our readers and users migrate and consume our product across platforms."
