New Zavvi owners pin hopes on customer database for revamping the brand

LONDON - Online retail specialist The Hut is reviving defunct entertainment retail chain Zavvi as part of a planned expansion into selling direct to consumers with Zavvi's database as the bedrock, The Hut's chief executive said yesterday.

Matthew Moulding told US website silicon.com that Zavvi, formerly Virgin Megastores, had invested "an awful lot of money on building a valuable customer database with detailed customer purchasing histories".

Moulding added the database has details of more than one million Zavvi customers and he hopes to have retained at least half of them by the end of the year.

The Hut runs websites for 15 retailers including Asda, Dixons and Tesco, as well as its own-brand website.

"TheHut.com launched as an unknown from a standing start and this year we expect to make £10m in sales. We think the chances of success with Zavvi, given its established customer base, are quite high," he told Silicon.com.

The Zavvi site relaunched yesterday and is set to expand the number of categories it offers to include computing and lingerie.

Zavvi went into administration last Christmas last year. It was launched in 2007 as a result of a management buyout of Virgin Megastores.
