NEW YORK - The New York Times has said it is to take a tough line on its planned metered paywall, which it has confirmed will go live in the first quarter of 2011.

The paper, the largest on the web, is working closely with Google to ensure people do not abuse its paywall and read too many articles for free.

Martin Nisenholtz, the N Y Times’ digital chief said Google had been "quite" cooperative in terms of setting a limit for the number of free articles that surfers can access via the search engine.
