New York Times partners with Daily Telegraph in the UK

LONDON – The New York Times is to launch an eight-page weekly supplement in Europe, and the bastion of US liberal newspaper journalism has chosen the conservative Daily Telegraph as its partner in the UK.

The deal with the UK's biggest-selling broadsheet newspaper will see the The New York Times International Weekly supplement published in the Telegraph's Business 2 + Jobs on Thursdays.

The deal is part of a wider push into Europe dubbed EuroReach that sees The New York Times partner with Le Monde in France, which will carry the supplement on Saturdays, while EuroReach ads will also be carried in the International Herald Tribune to give advertisers pan-European exposure.

The EuroReach deal is expected to be extended shortly to Germany, Italy and Spain. In the UK the supplement will initially be available in 400,000 copies of The Daily Telegraph in London and the South East.

Each week it will carry reports, photographs and graphics taken from The New York Times with each edition including stories about world trends, Americana, money and business, science and technology and style and culture. An editorial committee drawn from the participating newspapers, including The Daily Telegraph's managing editor Sue Ryan and a lead editor from The New York Times, will decide the editorial.

The New York Times has been upping its international activity ever since it took control of the International Herald Tribune in October 2002. It has since replaced Herald Tribune CEO Peter Goldmark with senior NYT executive Michael Golden.

There was talk that it would rename the Herald Tribune as the New York Times International. This has been denied but this latest move to promote the New York Times in Europe will further put the Herald Tribune in the shade.

Cristian Edwards, president of The New York Times syndication sales corporation, said: "We are very pleased to be taking The New York Times' journalism to this audience. Our shared commitment to the ideals of sound journalism and the importance of a free press makes our titles well matched."
