NY Metro speculation grows as Tribune readies launch

NEW YORK - Speculation is mounting that Metro International is to launch a free paper in New York in an attempt to take on the Tribune Company's free tabloid newspaper, amNew York, which launches tomorrow.

Speculation has been fuelled by ads that Metro International, the global publisher of Metro freesheets, has been running in The New York Times, looking for staff as part of an expansion of its East Coast operations.

Metro International already publishes several Metro papers in the US, in cities such as Philadelphia and Boston, as well as in 13 other cities around the world, including Stockholm, where the whole free Metro revolution began.

Tribune has been distributing flyers to create awareness of the new title, edited by former New York Daily News journalist Alex Storozynski, and which is targeting young readers with a Metro-type format of news, sports, entertainment, features and analysis for commuters.

The office location on the recruitment ads that Metro has been running was New York, giving rise to speculation that it plans a title to compete head to head with Tribune's new launch.

Metro has indicated in the past that it had no plans to launch any more titles until its existing ones are consistently profitable.

However, according to a report on , the company recently made Jim McDonald, publisher of the Philadelphia Metro, vice-president of business development with responsibility for new launches.

AmNew York is expected to have 32 pages and will be distributed through bins and via people handing them out. It will include features, editorials, dating and consumer columns, as well as entertainment and restaurant health code violator listings.

The launch in New York follows that of a freesheet by the Washington Post in the US capital called The Express.
