The shake-up has been overseen by former children's TV presenter Andi Peters, who is behind the new name 'All New Top of the Pops'.
The 40-year-old show has traditionally been pre-recorded on Wednesdays and has a reputation for allowing some acts to mime.
From November, when the revamped show launches, all acts will be expected to perform live, which could cause a problem for some chart stars.
The new show is expected to kick off with an hour-long special. It will be aimed at a younger audience and include more behind-the-scenes footage, but the backstage Star Bar will no longer be seen on screen.
Peters, the programme's executive producer, is also recruiting a new team of presenters as he tries to boost the show's audience, which has halved to 3m since 1995.
The show's current presenting line-up includes disgraced former 'Blue Peter' host and current Xfm DJ Richard Bacon and former MTV presenter Lisa Snowdon.
Peters returned to the BBC from Channel 4 in July after being appointed as executive editor of music and entertainment, after successfully launching Channel 4's youth strand T4.
He is understood to have presented his ideas for the new format to music industry figures at the British Phonographic Industry on Monday.
The spin-off indie and rock show will be broadcast on BBC Two.
