MySpace bolsters music focus with additional features

LONDON - MySpace is to strengthen its music focus with the global rollout of features including artist data, music videos and integration with the iTunes Music Store.

The additions are part of the News Corporation-owned business's attempts to specialise in entertainment and move away from a head-to-head general social networking battle with Facebook.

The Artist Dashboard feature allows users to access MySpace data including song plays, fan geography and trending data available for seven and thirty day glances.

The Video feature means users will now be able to access MySpace Music's fully licensed video catalogue and get recommendations for videos what user's friends are listening to.

The company has also made a deal with Apple to allow users to buy music from the iTunes Music Store directly from the MySpace site.

Owen Van Natta, CEO of MySpace, said: "Artist Dashboard and Music Videos are an important
step forward in our mission to define the future of how content is socialized on the Web."

He added the rollout will help achieve MySpace's goal of being an important content distribution platform.

Van Natta, a former Facebook executive, became CEO of MySpace in April and been taking the website in a new direction focusing on entertainment content.
