MTV picks BBC's Gambino to lead new media development

LONDON - The BBC's controller of business development and emerging platforms Angel Gambino is leaving to join MTV, where she will expand the broadcaster's reach into mobile and interactive TV.

Gambino will start work on September 1, reporting to Michiel Bakker, the managing director of MTV Networks for the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia.

She will develop technological and commercial partnerships, which will extend content from MTV Networks UK's 11 channels on to mobiles and on-demand and interactive TV. The channels include MTV, VH1, VH2, TMF and Paramount Comedy.

MTV has just launched a mobile entertainment subscription portal called Flux in Japan, which it intends to roll out globally. It allows members to watch MTV shows such as 'The Osbournes' and 'Dirty Sanchez'.

"Angel has an excellent reputation within the industry, well known for her strategic approach and first-class digital media experience," Bakkier said.

During four years at the BBC, Gambino took the corporation's output on to mobile phones and launched on-demand broadband services such as the BBC News Player.

She has irritated commercial mobile operators by offering mobile users content, such as this year's Grand National coverage, free of charge.

Although Gambino announced last month that she would be departing from the BBC, it was not known until now where she was heading.

Of her appointment, she said that she was looking forward to harnessing the power of MTV Networks UK's brands across multiple platforms and driving deeper audience connections.

The BBC is not looking for a replacement, because director of new media Ashley Highfield has restructured the department, dispensing with Gambino's current role.
