LONDON - The parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to public health minister Dawn Primarolo has called for an advertising push aimed at parents to curb the effects of youth binge-drinking.

MP calls for ads warning parents of dangers of youth drinking

Speaking at a Westminister Hall debate, Helen Jones, the Labour MP for Warrington North, said: ‘I urge the government to think seriously about a hard-hitting advertising campaign targeted at parents about the effects of alcohol-related crime, and the effects on young people, both the victims and the perpetrators.'

She said there was a need to ‘get the message through to the minority who do not heed it at present'.

Jones also called for a review of the rules governing the advertising and promotion of soft drinks. ‘The alcopops and cheap ciders that are often sold in nice packaging, in blue and green bottles, are not targeted at adult social drinkers but directly at the young,' she claimed.

The government is poised to roll out a wide-ranging £10m campaign, created by VCCP, aimed initially at educating consumers on unit awareness. Other elements of the work, such as the effect drink can have on health, are due to follow later in the year.
