Mobile users now able tune in to Sky News and Cartoon Network

LONDON - Sky and other broadcasters have signed up for a six-month trial broadcast of 16 digital TV channels to mobile phones, in a project being run and funded by NTL Broadcast and O2 in the Oxford area from September.

Three Sky channels will be available to 350 O2 customers, who will be provided with Nokia's new 7710 handset, fitted with a special receiver. The channels are Sky News, Sky Sports News and Sky Travel -- the same line-up available on Freeview.

No analogue broadcaster has yet signed up, but Turner Broadcasting is offering CNN and Cartoon Network and Discovery Networks Europe is offering the Discovery Channel.

There will also be a music channel, Chart Show Channels' Chart Show TV, and a short films channel from distributor Shorts International.

That leaves space for eight more channels, and NTL Broadcast is in discussions with several broadcasters.

Terry Howard, head of media business development at NTL Broadcast, said: "This trial will give a useful insight into how the new technology performs, and we intend to use that information to inform the broadcasters, mobile operators and Ofcom about the consumer appeal of the service."
