The report by eMarketer – its first covering the UK ecommerce market – claims that ecommerce sales will grab an 11% share of the UK’s £383bn retail market this year.

The research firm predicts that overall, digitally driven sales, excluding travel, will represent 11.5% of total UK retail sales in 2013, compared with 10.2% last year.

Although non-mobile device sales will continue to rise "robustly" over the coming years, it is commerce through mobile devices that is experiencing record-levels of growth, the report says.

Tablet-driven commerce will grow by triple digits in 2013 for the third year running, to £3.57bn, although eMarketer said that smartphone mcommerce sales will fall to 42.6%.

Mcommcerce sales are predicted to climb from £6.61bn in 2013 to £17.24bn by 2017, a hike in share of all ecommerce sales from 15% to 26.5%.

EMarketer estimates that 23.4 million people in the UK will this year use their smartphones to browse and research products.
