The Media/Entertainment & Technology Convergence Group will consolidate the company's global strategy of providing entertainment online.
Microsoft has appointed Blair Westlake as corporate vice-president of the convergence group. He is the former chairman of the Universal Television & Networks Group.
Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, said: "The creation of the group underscores Microsoft's strong commitment to ensuring that effective business relationships, technologies and policies are in place to meet increasing consumer demand for high-quality audio-visual digital information, entertainment, news and sports programming."
The convergence group will develop cross-industry partnerships to supply consumers with entertainment and media content, using personal computers as the "hub" in a fully networked home environment. The group will also work with its partners in media and entertainment to come up with solutions to the problem of digital piracy, including legislation and regulatory frameworks, content-protection technology, digital rights management and media format standards.
Microsoft announced that it will continue to work with the media, entertainment and technology consulting firm, Lieberfarb & Associates, to develop the global strategy of the group.
