Event caught up with some of the Fast Forward 15 mentors who have volunteered to take part in the new not-for-profit mentoring programme, set up by Zibrant managing director Fay Sharpe. .
Among those backing the scheme is Jackie Mulligan, principal lecturer at Leeds Beckett University. She said: "Event courses attract a large component of women but it is frustrating that this is not reflected in senior positions. This scheme is important to inspire people to go further in their career and for men and women to play equally."
Karen Sumner, senior events manager at law firm Allen & Overy, agreed: "In senior positions, there is still an apparent divide between men and women. There are a number of reasons why women may not choose to push for senior positions and I think one major factor is because they may have chosen the family route and the opportunities available do not always offer flexibility. Access to guidance, experience and support in how to achieve their career goals and manage any challenges they may face along the way is key to making a difference."
Fellow mentor and event consultant Jason Scott, added: "Things are changing. It was great to see so many women in the this year, but something is happening when women want to move up. We need to create a level playing field of equal opportunities. This is a great opportunity for me and all the mentors to give back to the industry."
and candidates will be selected following a formal interview process and will be announced at an event at The Savoy on 20 March.
