McDonald's is teens' favourite food brand survey finds

LONDON - McDonald's is the favourite food brand of teenagers in the UK, a new survey has found, with 10% of them eating fast food more than twice a week.

The new research has been carried out by UK Club Culture, a clubbing brand aimed at under-18s, to draw a picture about the lifestyles of British teenagers.

It found that the top five food brands for 13- to 17-year-olds in the UK are McDonald's, Cadbury, Pizza Hut, KFC and Coca-Cola. The only healthy brand to receive any votes was Evian, chosen by 3% as their favourite food brand. When asked what their favourite kind of food is, 18.8% said chocolate, compared with 0.9% who said a sandwich.

Overall, their favourite fashion brand is FCUK, followed by Nike and Top Shop. Luxury labels Gucci, Burberry and DKNY are also favourites, all making the top 10 fashion brands.

However, the reality of affording such labels is obviously a stretch for the majority of teens. Girls said their favourite shop was New Look, while boys favoured JJB Sports.

Other startling findings from the survey are the fact that only 3% of the children surveyed said they enjoy reading books. More than 95% of them own a mobile phone, while one in seven own an iPod. Nokia is their favourite technology brand, followed jointly by iPod and PlayStation.

The research has been compiled by marketing agency KAE on behalf of UK Club Culture.
