As part of the £40m expansion scheme, the two companies are looking to build on large sites located alongside A-roads.

The sites will be paid for by Marston's, which will build a pub before leasing the remaining land to to construct a hotel. The first development is set for Wincanton in Somerset.

‘By co-locating with Marston's, we will be able to develop sites which would not have been viable for ourselves alone,' said Paul Harvey, managing director at Travelodge.

Last year, Travelodge signed a deal with discount retailer Aldi to build a number of hotels above the retailer's store premises.
