Marketing likely to be hit as Asda cuts 1,400 jobs

LONDON - Supermarket chain Asda is cutting 1,400 jobs including almost 200 head office staff, some of which are likely to affect the supermarket's marketing department although a spokesman for Asda said that it was too early to say.

The changes have also led to the promotion of trading and marketing director Angela Spindler to the newly created post of customer and strategy director.

Spindler will continue to have charge of trade marketing but will be given the additional responsibilities of customer service, format development and business strategy. She will also sit on the Asda board when she takes up the position on October 1.

According to a company spokesman, Spindler's appointment does not affect the role of Asda marketing director Chris Pilling.

However, as part of the 1,400 job cuts, 185 management roles will cut at its head office with the marketing department likely to be shaken.

Other changes to the senior executive team include the appointment of Andy Clarke as retail director. Clarke will return to Asda on September 5 after a three-year gap at retailers Matalan and Iceland. He will also take charge of Asda's financial services business.

The changes to management are part of a group-wide cull of about 1,400 employees. As part of that, the company is scrapping management posts at Asda's Leeds headquarters and its Lutterworth office.

The changes have been made by Asda's president and chief executive Andy Bond. "While our sales have slowed in recent months as the economy has tightened, Asda is no retailer straggler," he said. He added that the changes made across the business will "reignite our business over the next 12 to 18 months".
