Retail news: Asda overhauls egg production

Asda is pledging to release 500,000 hens from battery cages into open barns this year as it changes the way it sources its eggs.

In partnership with the RSPCA, the supermarket is phasing out the use of battery production for any of its standard own-label eggs. The retailer, which will sell 140m fewer eggs from battery-farmed hens in the next 12 months, has collaborated with egg suppliers to develop different methods of egg production. Asda claims sales of barn and free-range eggs are growing at a rate of 22%.

RSPCA senior scientific officer John Avizienius said he hoped Asda's policy would force its rivals to follow suit.
