MAGAZINE ABCs: Music titles fail to rock

LONDON - Established music magazines NME and Kerrang! suffered circulation falls of more than 20% year on year, according to the latest magazine ABC figures for July to December 2009.

IPC’s weekly NME, under its first female editor, Krissi Murison, since September 2009, recorded a circulation of 38,486 – down 20.6% year on year and a fall of 6% over the period.

IPC reaffirmed its commitment to the magazine and, furthermore, pointed to its various brand extensions – including NME Radio and NME TV – claiming the NME brand has a reach of more than one million.

Paul Cheal, publishing director at NME, said the brand remains the iconic music brand.

Sister monthly title Uncut was down 13.3% year on year to 75,518 copies, although it had a more stable six months, down just 1.3%.

It still lags behind Bauer monthlies Mojo and Q.

Bauer’s Mojo boasted a circulation of 98,484, up 0.8% on the period and extended its lead over Q, which was down 5.4% over the period to 94,811.

Free monthly title, The Fly, published by Channelfly Enterprises, continues to be the market leader, with an average circulation of 108,906 – up 1.1% over the period.

Future’s Classic Rock had a strong six months, up 1.3% to 71,242 copies, while sister title Metal Hammer was down 9.2% on the period and 16.9% on the year, to 41,777.
