The collection had shades entitled Juarez, Factory and Ghost Town, named after Ciudad Juarez, which is infamous for the number of women murdered there. The branding as beauty writers highlighted the link.

Mac initially apologised for the product branding and said it would give an amount of the profits to charity, but it has now been forced to rebrand the range entirely.

The cosmetics giant has also pledged to donate $100,000 to a "non-profit organization that has a proven, successful track-record helping women in need and that can directly improve the lives of women in Juarez in a meaningful way."

Rodarte, the fashion house which inspired the collection, also issued a statement in an attempt to draw a line under the controversy, stating: "We recognize that the violence against women taking place in Juarez needs to be met with proactive action.

"We never intended to make light of this serious issue and we are truly sorry. Helping to improve the conditions for women in Juarez is a priority for us and we are thankful for all the comments calling attention to the urgency of addressing this situation.'

According to Amnesty International, more than 400 women have been brutally killed in Ciudad Juárez and the majority of the crimes remain unsolved.
