Leslie loses £550,000 magazine deal after being charged

LONDON - A £550,000 deal between Express Newspapers and John Leslie has been scuppered by the news that the television presenter has been charged with two counts of indecent assault.

Leslie was reported to have done the deal to tell his story to the Daily Express and OK! magazine, both owned by Richard Desmond, after it looked as if he would escape charges relating to allegations he had attacked a number of women, including TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson.

Reports in the press say that he has also been forced to cancel a party that had been planned to celebrate his freedom.

Yesterday, Leslie said that the court case would be a chance to prove his innocence.

Speaking outside Forest Gate Police Station after being charged, Leslie said: "Such has been the speculation and endless rumour mongering that I never believed I would be able to clear my name and reputation without going through the due court process.

"To that extent, I eagerly await my trial to confirm my innocence and to reclaim my life."

He said that he had been asked to remain silent and not answer allegations in the press that he had attacked a number of women.

Leslie left his job co-presenting ITV's 'This Morning' nine months ago, after the publication of Jonsson's autobiography 'Honest'. In the book, she said she had been raped by a television presenter in the 1980s, but did not name or give any other identifying information as to the man's identity.

It was not until TV talkshow host Matthew Wright named Leslie as the man at the centre of the allegations that the rest of the media named the presenter in reports. Wright named him on his morning show 'The Wright Stuff' on Five.

Several women then approached tabloid newspapers with stories that they, too, had been attacked.

The two counts of indecent assault with which Leslie is charged with do not relate to Jonsson, but to an unnamed woman, who claims the attacks took place in May 1997.
