Les Ferdinand signs as analyst for Setanta Sports

LONDON - Setanta Sports has signed former England footballer Les Ferdinand as an analyst for its debut Barclays Premier League coverage next season.

Ferdinand joins lead presenter Angus Scott and star analyst, the former Liverpool and England player Steve McManaman, as part of Setanta's on-air team who will front the broadcaster's Saturday night 5.15pm and Monday night 8pm kick offs.

Setanta paid £392m for the rights to exclusively screen 46 Barclays Premier League games for three years from the 2007-2008 season in May 2006, sharing coverage with Sky Sports, which will broadcast 92 games.

Trevor East, director of sport at Setanta, said: "What [Les] will bring to our coverage is a valuable insight from a leading striker's perspective. He is the latest of our summer signings and there'll be more to come as we finalise our line up for August."

Ferdinand said: "I'm really looking forward to working alongside Steve and Angus at Setanta Sports. I played alongside Steve with England and it's going to be fantastic being at the station at the start of their exciting venture."

Ferdinand made his name at QPR, scoring 90 goals in 183 games, earning himself the nickname "Sir Les". He also played for Newcastle, Spurs, West Ham, Leicester, Bolton and Reading and made 17 appearances for England.

Setanta Sports teamed up with ITV to pen a £425m deal in March with the Football Association to share the TV rights for the FA Cup and England's home international matches for four years, beating incumbents The BBC and Sky.

The Irish-owned broadcaster launched its Freeview package for £10.99 in March this year.
