It is a reverse of MTV's 'Simple Life' programme, which saw the spoiled rich kids, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, shipped out of Beverly Hills to live in rural Arkansas.
'Amish in the City' is being made by the UPN network and is set to begin screening in the US on July 28. However, it is already causing an outcry for fears that it would ridicule the Amish religion and exploit the youths, who are aged between 18 and 24.
The 10-hour series follows the youths going through an Amish rite of passage known as "rumspringa", where teenagers are allowed to go out in the world to experience modern life before deciding if they want to stay with their communities.
In 'Amish in the City', they are living in an ultra-modern house in the Hollywood Hills, which they share with people including a nightclub promoter, an aspiring musician, a swimming instructor and a woman described simply as a "party girl".
During the show, they will work with the mentally disabled, take a helicopter trip to a resort island and walk the red carpet at a Hollywood movie premiere.
UPN has already hit back at criticism by saying that the participants were being treated with respect.
In a statement, Dawn Ostroff, president of UPN Entertainment, said: "Foremost in our minds, as we went forward, was to treat with the highest respect the young Amish people, who were entering a world they had never before experienced."
