Last week, after attending a parliamentary breakfast briefing held by the Advertising Standards Authority to mark the launch of its digital remit extension, Helen Goodman MP posted a to glean opinions on advertising to children.

The shadow justice spokeswoman wrote: "I am a mum and an MP and this morning I went to a meeting with the Advertising Standards Agency [sic], where they said they were introducing new standards [online] on ads to children. They said parents could control what their children see by using a privacy button, but do you think most parents know about this, let alone use it?"

She then went on to accuse the ASA of "shuffling off their responsibilities onto us", adding "we need something tighter". She called for views to "feed in to how we take this forward in parliament".

However, so far the call has only drawn two responses. One user, Coffee, replied: "Parents should be more informed about controlling the net, not new laws that will end up covering lots of other things."

Another using the name Davsmum, said: "I think if your child is using the internet you need to make it your business to find out what is there in terms of protection."

Speaking to Marketing, Goodman said it was unacceptable that companies could "use the same cookies to target children as they can with adults", and that children under seven years old "should be protected from advertising".

An Advertising Association spokesman said: "This is further evidence that parents have a common sense point of view on these issues."
