LA Times loses subscribers over 'reporting bias' towards Palestinians

LONDON - The Los Angeles Times has been hit by reader power as nearly 1,000 subscribers have cancelled their subscriptions to the newspaper after accusing it of being biased towards the Palestinians in its coverage of the troubles in the Middle East.

The newspaper admitted in today's edition that it began receiving calls about its reporting of the fighting between Palestinians and Israel on Monday.

By Wednesday, the paper said it had received more than 900 calls, although not all had cancelled their subscriptions. Officials at the LA Times said they could not provide precise figures on the number of delivery suspensions, but said the orders amount to less than one 10th of 1% of the paper's total daily circulation of slightly more than 1m.

LA Times editor John Carroll said the newspaper has devoted a large staff of reporters and photographers to report on the fighting in the Middle East where Israel is trying to stop suicide bombers blowing up innocent Israeli civilians.

Carroll said: "Our goal is to provide coverage that is both fair and complete. We serve our readership by covering all aspects and points of view."

According to a report in the paper, Dr Joe Englanoff of UCLA Medical Center said talk about staging the protest against The Times' Middle East coverage began circulating through Southern California's Jewish community several weeks ago.

"Thousands have been contacted, mostly by email," he said. "There's a feeling in the community that The Times clearly has been one-sided and biased in its reporting about the Middle East. People in the Jewish community want to express their anger."

The paper confirmed that around 1,000 people had suspended their subscriptions.
