The agency beat Lowe and HHCL/Red Cell to win the work, in a pitch overseen by UK country manager Neil Mott. Incumbent Leagas Delaney declined to repitch for the work.
Leagas Delaney was appointed to the pan-European account in September 2001. It launched Opodo's UK services in 2002 with a £3.5m press and television campaign. The TV ads used the Iggy Pop track 'Lust for Life' and the line: "Your flights on your terms... and about time too."
The agency continues to work on the brand in Germany. Opodo also operates in France and plans further expansion in Europe this year.
Mott said: "The UK online travel market is a dynamic and challenging environment. We selected Karmarama because it presented the most strategic response to our brief, showed a strong understanding of our brand and developed exciting and original creative concepts, which will challenge traditional travel advertising."
Karmarama, which calls itself a communications design agency rather than an advertising agency, created the "shlomping" campaign for Ikea. It also works on accounts including Emap radio station Kiss FM and last month was appointed to Amnesty International's anti-domestic violence campaign.
The appointment does not affect media buying agency MediaCom. Opodo continues to use Wheel Group for online creative and DMD for email marketing.
