The Tyne and Wear Jubilee Tattoo will feature marching bands, a cadet challenge and music and dancing styles from the six decades of the Queen’s reign.
A pageant will also explore historic highlights from the last 60 years, followed a finale of musical favourites from Last Night of the Proms.
More than 300 performers are expected to take part in the two performances of the tattoo in St Peter's Square at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus of the University of Sunderland.
Alisdair Hutton OBE will narrate the event, having written and narrating the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo for the last 20 years.
The tattoo is part of the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Nigel Sherlock, the Lord Lieutenant, said: "Red, white and blue will be the order of the day. We'll be charting some of the many historic events of the last 60 years, so we've certainly got quite a bit to fit in. We're hoping lots of people are going to come along and have a wonderful time."
